BITS, NIBBLES AND BYTES - the computer arithmetic - Binary
There are only two values - On or Off, like a lightswitch:
0 ........................... represents no value present ......................... Off
1 ........................... represents a value present ........................... On
0 ........................... represents no value present ......................... Off
1 ........................... represents a value present ........................... On
BIT - A single character of a language, having just two characters - either of the binary digits O or I
NIBBLE - This is not a common term. It is a group of 4 bits and 2 Nibbles will equal 1 Byte
BYTE
- A combination of 8 binary digits. Each byte represents a single character or letter.
- The capital letter A = 01000001
- The space occupied by a single character in a computer store
KILOBYTE .............. KB
- One kilobyte is 1,024 bytes or characters
- Approximately equal to one A4 page of double-spaced text
MEGABYTE ............ MB
- One megabyte is 1.024 KB
- Approximately equal to one reasonably sized book
GIGABYTE ................ GB
- One gigabyte is 1,024 MB
- Approximately equal to a shelf of books in a library
TERABYTE ............... TB
- One terabyte is 1,024 GB
- Approximately equal to one reasonably sized library
